What Does It Cost to Paint the Interior of My Home?

There are many variables that affect the cost of residential home interior painting. This can’t be compared to new construction painting; this is a different animal.

We will use a 2000 square foot house as our example.

Do you want to paint millwork, doors, ceiling and walls?

If you want to keep your millwork and doors the same color, a fresh coat of paint applied with a brush and roller may be the most cost-effective solution. However, one coat of paint will not suffice if you need a different, brighter white color. Two or three coats of paint should be applied with a sprayer to achieve complete coverage with a smooth finish. Attempting to paint multiple coats of paint with a brush and roller on millwork and doors is not a good idea because invariably brush marks may be visible.

Are your doors and millwork stained?

The process is more labor intensive if your millwork and doors are stained. Typically holes and joints are filled with Bondo and caulking is applied where wood meets drywall. It is important to point out here, that a well lived-in home with millwork and doors that have damage would require more preparation time to repair large dings and scratches. After repair, we apply one coat of primer and two coats of Benjamin Moore premium millwork paint with a sprayer.

Futhermore, the cost to paint millwork and doors in a home this size depends on how much millwork there is. Do you have crown molding, columns, and wainscoting, and will it be hand painted or sprayed?

The cost to paint interior millwork and doors could be in the range of $3500-$6000.

We determine the cost of painting the ceiling and walls by the height, the number of rooms, and whether or not closets and the garage are included. Additionally, we consider how much drywall repair is needed including retexturing to match the existing texture.

Lastly, we take into account how many coats of the new color(s) we need to apply. If the ceiling and walls in your home are a medium to dark color, the new lighter white will have difficulty covering it in the industry standard two coat application with a brush and roller. Being forced to apply a third and sometimes fourth coat would significantly increase the project’s cost.

The cost to paint ceilings and walls could be in the range of $8500-$10,000.
