Home Renovation Project Steps

First, We Make a Plan

A renovation project can transform a home, but it requires careful planning.

During our Scope Definition meeting, we work together to figure out the whole scope of the job. The order is a big part of the schedule and the operations.

The next step is to do a Color Consultation once the scope is clear. During this step, your design lane is chosen. If you know which lane to stay in, it will be easier for you to make decisions. All of the colors will have already been chosen, including those for the flooring, trim, cabinets, countertops, tile, appliances, fixtures, rugs, furniture, decorations, and paint. You’ll have a “color map” and pictures to help you decide what to do. There will be tips on where to go to look at your options and make your final decisions.

Then, We Get Some Help

When you know what you want and how much it will cost to get it, you call the different trades and ask them to bid. Or, if you hire a general contractor (GC), he or she will probably do some of the work themselves and hire the appropriate tradespeople.

Knowing what you want before you hire a GC is very important and will help him or her a lot. You will need to talk to your general contractor to find out if they want you to buy all the materials or if they will buy them and bill you for them along with their work costs. GCs sometimes charge more for items as a way to make some of their profit. A lot of the time, they get a trades discount on supplies, which they might or might not pass on to you.

Being the GC on your own home is a lot of work. It is well worth the money to hire a company to handle everything.

In today’s world, it’s best to have all of your materials ordered and sitting in your garage before you start tearing things down. Make sure to open and check each box as soon as you get it. Always order a little more than what is predicted, since a new box of tiles or flooring might be a slightly different color.

Finally, We Paint

Once the trim, flooring, cabinets, countertops, and tile have been put in, the time has come to paint. Painting is like the “icing on the cake” for me. Just like it sounds, you wouldn’t try to put a center between the layers of a cake that was already iced with flowers, right?
